Eligibility

In order to apply for SNAP benefits in New York, applicants must meet the criteria set forth by the USDA's SNAP Eligibility Requirements, as well as supplying the necessary documentation, including a Social Security Number for each household member, as requested by the state. While an applicant's personal real estate, personal vehicle and personal property do not disqualify a family from receiving benefits, countable assets such as bank accounts should not exceed $2000, or $3000 if the home has an elderly or disabled occupant. Households must have a gross monthly income at or below 130 percent of the Federal poverty guidelines. After allowable deductions, a household's monthly net income should be 100 percent or less of the Federal poverty guidelines in order to be eligible for SNAP. Finally, adults residing in a household must also meet work requirements as outlined by the program.
